Town Square is an opinion column to which readers can submit their views. As a true community newspaper, we’re always looking for ways to include local thought and pertinent viewpoints. This column is a way to share those thoughts. Civility and fair comment will always prevail.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is opposing cuts in environmental education funding. Readers responded.
HARMFUL: No thanks, CBF has missed the mark, many MD residents care about the environment and the Chesapeake Bay, CBF has lost the residents trust, it has become reliant on and expected to receive these type of programs to fund themselves. I am sure other opportunities and innovative programs will develop and arise to foster better experiences and education for our students. CBF has been prejudicial, harmful, and destructive to the seafood industry in Dorchester County, the real estate market, and how infrastructure projects should be prioritized.

House of Delegates passed Blue for Maryland’s Future education reform bill, also known as the Kirwin Commission.
NOT FUNDED: Here comes the cost with no guarantee this new throw the money at it program will work. This is not funded and they plan to kick a lot of the cost down to the counties that are already strapped.

NOT THE MAIN ISSUE: Counties will have to come up with an additional 30 percent, and the bill does not address the main issue facing schools, discipline. I would love to see some of these law makers walk the halls of a high school, without police protection to see what it is truly like. In 20 years, this will be looked at as yet another failure, “throwing money at a problem”.

TRAINING: I agree with the need for career education.

HOW WILL IT HELP? Our schools are some of the highest funded in the nation, and spend well above the national, per student average. Please tell me how more funding is going to make kids get up and go to school, do their homework, and pass their tests. In what way are our schools “underfunded?”

CORONAVRUS: I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let’s meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge.
