Town Square, April 10, 2019

Town Square is an opinion column to which readers can submit their views. As a true community newspaper, we’re always looking for ways to include local thought and pertinent viewpoints. This forum is a way to share those thoughts. Civility and fair comment will always prevail.

The Banner reported on Superintendent of Dorchester County Public Schools Dr. Diana Mitchell’s retirement in our April 3 issue. Readers shared their views.

FEAR: Perhaps she has realized she can’t do the work Dorchester County Public Schools needs. Security is the number-one priority. Why is it that our educators feel fear in helping our community, when we can’t control our children? Safety is number one.

DISRESPECT: That was another thought that crossed my mind too. Children are too disrespectful. And you can’t say but much to them, because the parents will be in the teacher’s face.

The Banner reported on the passing of local businessman and race director Gerry Boyle in our April 3 edition, as well as a movement to rename Great Marsh Park in his honor. Readers shared their views.

IN MEMORY OF GERRY: So we, at Rename Great Marsh Park in Honor of Gerry Boyle reached 1,000 signatures – in just a short time, people from around the world showed their support for an amazing man, Gerry Boyle. Now that we have this support, I will continue talking to the city council to get this done. Hopefully, it won’t be too complicated, as politicians tend to try to make things. Great Man + Amazing Deeds + Humility = PARK.

FELLOW VETERAN: Such very sad news of the untimely passing of my friend Gerry. Gerry and I served together in the British Army in the ‘70s and 80s, with the Junior Leaders Regiment, Royal Corps of Transport in the UK and 7 Tank Transporter Regiment Royal Corps of Transport in Germany. He was an officer of great repute who empathized with his soldiers and who was universally respected by all that had the privilege of serving with him at every level. He leaves countless memories of the good times that were had both on and off duty; a great character. Na Zdrowie! Rest in Peace, Gerry

INSPIRATION: This year will be my first Maryland, and he was why I chose this race. I know he will be watching over us.

DEEP THOUGHTS: Oh, Gerry — “He was a man, take him for all in all/I shall not look upon his like again.”
