CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s 2018 football season will begin Friday, when the Vikings will face the Queen Anne’s County Lions. This year’s campaign will begin like last year’s, with the Vikings facing three of the Bayside Conference’s top teams: QAC, Kent Island and North Caroline.

That stretch got the Vikes off to an 0-3 start last year, as they went on to a 6-4 regular-season record.

“We’re going to take it one game at a time,” new Head Coach Gaven Parker said. “We’re off to another tough start.”

He was speaking after Friday’s scrimmage against visiting Parkside, which C-SD lost, 20-6. The practice contest was not played according to a regular format, as the teams had a normal clock for just one quarter.

Following that, each side played 10 minutes of offense and 10 minutes of defense, and that was it.

The visitors gained three first downs running on their first three plays. Their first touchdown came on their first pass, and the fifth play of the drive.

The score was 14-0 at the end of the quarter. It wasn’t until the 6:45 mark of the second period that the Vikings put their first points on the board.

“Parkside is a big, physical team,” Coach Parker said, adding that his boys “learned tough lessons”. They now have to learn how to play bigger opponents, he said.

Coaches summarizing the game Friday spoke to the players, telling them that they need to be faster off the ball and do a better job at the point of attack. The need for these lessons isn’t too surprising, considering the youth of the Vikings – there are many sophomores on the varsity squad.

Friday’s game in Vikings Stadium will begin at 6:30 p.m.
