CAMBRIDGE — Assistant Coach Gaven Parker has been named Head Coach of the Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Viking football team, taking the place of Jake Coleman who is stepping down after 12 seasons at the helm.

Parker, a physical education teacher at Vienna Elementary School, played football for Laurel, Delaware High School and Salisbury University, graduating in 2013. He joined the Viking coaching staff five years ago and for the past two years has been offensive coordinator.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to be the head coach of the Cambridge-South Dorchester football team,” Mr. Parker said. “I look forward to putting my stamp on an already tradition-rich program. It is amazing how much community support we receive and I wish to continue that. My goal is to continue the winning tradition here at C-SD and make the community proud of the boys who wear the gold helmets.”

Mr. Coleman is delighted with the selection of Parker as his successor.

“I’m confident he’s prepared for this moment,” he said. “I’m very excited to have someone like Gaven running the program when my sons come through. I’m here to offer help and support, but I’ve stepped back for a reason – to be a father.”

Mr. Coleman leaves the C-SD football program after 12 years, with a 92-51 record and a string of 1A Bayside titles.

“Coach Parker met with returning members of the team, beginning a new era of Viking football,” a statement from Dorchester County Public Schools said. “Some things change but some things stay the same: Gold Pride!”

The team will first take the field under their new head coach on Aug. 24, when the Vikings play a scrimmage at home against Parkside High School. On Aug. 31, C-SD’s regular season will begin with a home game against Queen Anne’s County.
