CAMBRIDGE  — A strong start helped carry the Cambridge-South Dorchester High School girls’ junior varsity basketball team to a convincing 35-23 win over Colonel Richardson Tuesday evening.
The Lady Vikings, now 3-5, stretched their first-quarter lead at one point to 10-3, creating an advantage that the visiting Colonels couldn’t overcome.

The girls’ improving skills were seen throughout the contest, such as in freshman Kirmya Wilson’s decisive pass to Me’Aziah Wilson, who used it to score the first points of the second quarter at the 5:00 mark, making it 12-5.

Coach Andrew Bishop urged his players to greater efforts during a time out, saying they could do more to shut down the Colonels. “You’re fast enough, you have to use it” when pressing, he said.
Dejah Matthews and Latisha Williams were on the job, with Dejah taking charge under the net, grabbing rebounds and sinking a basket with about three minutes left in the half for a 14-8 Vikings lead. Latisha used her speed and quick hands to snatch a couple steals, both of which turned into layups, leaving the home team with a 28-11 lead late in the second quarter.

Scoring slowed during the third quarter, which ended with the score 30-11. The Colonels tried to come back during the final period, closing the gap with a few buckets before falling short as the clock ticked down.

“We played very well tonight,” Coach Bishop said. “We broke their press.”

The coach added that players’ parents and other coaches have noticed and are very proud of the girls’ continuing development and progress in the sport.
