Students invited to enter art & essay contest

CAMBRIDGE — The Dorchester County 350th Anniversary Steering Committee invites students in kindergarten through 12th grade to celebrate Dorchester’s diverse history by creating an essay or artwork that answers or illustrates the following:

If you had a time machine and could travel anywhere in Dorchester County’s history, when and where would you go? Why did you choose to travel to that period of history?

Voice: how the author brings the topic to life
Organization, essay structure and sentence fluency

PRIZES
Winners will be selected in four levels: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12).

First place winners in each category will receive a cash prize and a family membership to the Dorchester Center for the Arts. Awards will be presented at the Dorchester County Showcase on Sept. 22 in Cambridge.

Winners must be present to
receive their awards. By submitting to this contest, you understand that this work may be displayed publicly.

RULES
Artwork
• In color – not black and white
• Original, on an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of white paper
• Title and/or caption must clearly identify the period of history illustrated
• A label with the following information must be securely affixed to the lower back corner of each art entry, so it is out of view of judges: student’s name, school, grade level (Fall 2019), parents’ or guardians’ names and contact information (phone and email).

Essays
• Essay written legibly (preferably typed)
• Submitted on 8 ½” x 11” paper, single sided – Do NOT fold entries
• No more than 500 words in length
• Title must identify the period of history
• A label with the following information must be securely affixed to a lower, back corner of each essay: student’s name, school, grade level (Fall 2019), parents’ or guardians’ names and contact
information (phone and email).

DEADLINES
Submit all entries to your current classroom teacher by June 11
Or Send (or drop off) your entries to the Dorchester County Tourism Office by Aug. 1: Attn: Amanda Fenstermaker, 2 Rosehill Place, Cambridge.
