CAMBRIDGE — On July 3, Dorchester Center for the Arts will open “Women in the World: The Impact of the 19th Amendment.” Organized by local artist Lori Dever, the exhibit is being presented in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which was signed into law in August 1920 – recognizing women’s right to vote after nearly 100 years of protest.

Although the amendment was meant to apply to all women, voter suppression measures meant many women of color were not granted access to voting, including African American, Asian American, and Native American women. For many, the 19th Amendment was not the end, but the beginning of a new era of political involvement.

The exhibit features work by several local women, including (confirmed at press time) Karen Bearman, Elissa Crouch, Lori Dever, Maureen Farrell, Leslie Giles, Katie Hurley, Lisa Krentel, MaryAnn Schindler, and Linda Starling. The works span across a variety of mediums and respond uniquely to the impact of the 19th Amendment.
“Women in the World” runs July 3–25. Gallery hours July 3 from noon-6 p.m.; starting July 9, hours will be Thursday-Saturday, noon-6 p.m.
Join the “virtual” Second Saturday Reception on June 11, 5:30-6:15 p.m., as DCA live streams on Facebook with a tour of the exhibition, talks with the exhibiting artists and of course – a toast to DCA’s next 50 years.
