Katelynn Cherry will present the final concert in the spring series Friday Night Live: Young Voices on tonight at 7 at the Dorchester Center for the Arts.

The Dorchester Center for the Arts presents the final concert of the spring of Friday Night Live: Young Voices with a performance by Katelynn Cherry. The concert is at 7 p.m. on the DCA Gallery Stage.

Katelynn’s performances have included the Avalon Theatre, Maryland House and Senate Dinner, the National Cherry Blossom Festival and more. She is a student of master voice classes in New York City, and a local community theater performer.

DCA Summer Art For
Children through Aug. 14

The Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) offers summer arts experiences to provide children with enriching, creative fun under the supervision of experienced artists. Programs are offered June 29 through Aug. 14. June through mid-July classes were previously announced; the remainder of the summer is listed here. Week 4: July 20 − 24
• Sketchy Sea Beasts! Full day for ages 6 and up
Students will explore the marine world and its inhabitants through two- and three-dimensional projects. Participants will craft colorful fish in clay, create sculptures with shells and starfish, plus design, sketch and create their own sea beasts. Fees are: $135 for DCA members, $150 non-members, and students should bring a lunch and drink. The class will run 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

• Conquer the Classics – Ages 9 and up
Participants will lean about great artists of the world and create their own masterpieces in paint. Students will work on drawing skills and create paintings reflecting the styles of great masters like Thiebaud, Picasso, Matisse, O’Keeffe, and Chagall. Fees are: $125 for DCA members; $150 for non-members, and student should bring a lunch and a drink. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Week 5: July 27 − 31
(Choose one or both for full-day; if enrolled in both, students should bring a lunch and drink.)
• Cartoon Drawing for ages 6 and up
Students will learn techniques to create favorite cartoon characters in a step-by-step follow-the-instructor drawing period. Critical thinking and solving problems play a role in this class as students work on the best concepts for their characters while developing drawing skills. Fees are: $75 for DCA members; $90 for non-members, and the class meets 9 – 11:30 a.m.

• Lions and Tigers and Bears – Oh My! for ages 6 and up.
Students will take a summer journey into the animal kingdom, learning about animals big and small through a variety of visual art projects. Participants will explore the stripes, patterns, and colors of the animal world through paint, colored pencil, marker, and collage. Fees are: $75 for DCA members, $90 non-members. The class meets from noon – 2:30 p.m.

• Fiber Art Fantastic! Ages 9 and up
Enrollees will explore the fiber arts with wool and yarn, learning to knit squares and work with felted wool. Students will discover how to make a blanket stitch to finish off the edging. Squares can be used for colorful coasters, or sewn together for a wall hanging. Fees are: $75 for DCA members; $90 for non-members and the class meets from 9 − 11:30 a.m.

• Draw, Draw Draw! Ages 9 and up
Students will learn to coordinate hand and eye in this observational drawing class for the serious young artist. This session will strengthen a love of drawing and self-expression, while developing skills in still life, natural landscapes, and portraiture. All levels are welcome. Students develop fundamental skills while working with graphite and charcoal. Fees are: $75 for DCA members; $90 for non-members. The class runs from noon – 2:30 p.m.

Week 6: Aug. 3 − 7
• Weave It, Paint It, Print It! for ages 8-11
In this class the focus is on decorative textile arts. Students will learn weaving techniques with natural fibers, experimenting with the process of batik, and exploring silkscreening and silk painting. Each young artisan will create his or her own designs to be used in the printmaking process. Fees are $135 for DCA members; $150 for non-members. The class runs from 9 am. to 2:30 p.m. and students should bring a lunch and drink.

Weeks 6 and 7: August 3 − 7 and 10 − 14 (must be enrolled in both weeks)
• Hollywood Bound! for ages 12 and up
Students discover the ins and outs of “professional filmmaking” and see what it’s like to step in front of and behind the camera. Students will write and direct their own film as they learn how to light shots, set moods, record sound, create special effects, and play with musical scoring to make their movie come alive. Fees are: $135 for DCA members; $150 for non-members. Students should bring a lunch and drink, and the class runs 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

• Saturday Summer Studio for Teens for ages 13-18
Saturdays July 11, 18, 25, and Aug. 1
In this immersive summer studio, students receive a wide range of instruction in the visual arts including painting, drawing, ceramics, and collage. Students will be introduced to throwing on the potter’s wheel as well as clay handbuilding techniques. Fees are: $95 for DCA members, $110 for non-members and the class runs from 9 a.m. – noon.

Registration Information

Registration forms are available online or by stopping in at the Center. DCA may cancel any class with insufficient enrollment; students will be notified and given a full refund. If the student withdraws before the class begins he/she will be refunded his/her tuition minus a $10 administrative fee. There are no refunds after the start of the class, and membership fees are nonrefundable. Students are not enrolled until complete payment is received. Classes are not pro-rated for student absences.

DCA Plein Air Golf Tourney Space for additional artists, teams

The Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) is presenting an inaugural Plein Air Golf Tournament and Cocktail Party on June 7, at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina in Cambridge. The event is sponsored by PNC Wealth Management.

Golf entry fees are $70 per person; $280 per team and include green fees, cart and cocktail party. There is no fee for painters, but a completed entry form is needed, which also allows for admission to the cocktail party. For non-golfers and non-painters, tickets are also available for the cocktail party only for $25, so that spouses and friends can join golfers after the event. The cocktail party will begin at 4:30 p.m.

DCA is also seeking hole sponsors for the tournament. The fee is $100 and each sponsor will have signage at the event. To become a hole sponsor, call 410-228-7782.
