City OKs free transient boat slip rentals during May

CAMBRIDGE — The City of Cambridge recently approved free transient slip rentals at its municipal yacht basin near the Frederick C. Malkus Memorial Bridge on the Choptank River for every Friday and Saturday night in May, as well as May 28 over the Memorial Day weekend.

Throughout the month of May, the city boasts an impressive slate of events within walking distance of the marina. These community events continue throughout the year, and the special May promotion is intended to introduce boaters to the marina and introduce them to the convenience of the Cambridge Municipal Yacht Basin.

“Our marina is unique. Throughout the summer, it is the focal point of the city because of the number of events and attractions hosted around it,” said Brandon Hesson, the associate director of Economic Development for the City of Cambridge. “Generations of people here have relied on the Choptank River. So, it’s natural that so many of our community events use it as a resource.”

On May 5 at 8 p.m., the city will hold a free Family Movie Night at Sailwinds Park, where it will show the 2016 animated feature SING and provide free popcorn and soda while supplies last. On May 6, it will help kick off the boating season with an afternoon bluegrass show at noon from regional favorite Flatland Drive.

Mother’s Day weekend is also busy, featuring three Cambridge staples, all located close to the marina.

At noon on May 13, the Cambridge Powerboat Regatta kicks off its 107th year of racing on the Choptank River. At 1 p.m., on High Street, The High Spot brings regional microbreweries to the city for its sixth-annual Cambridge Beer Festival with live music, great food and seasonal brews. Also on Saturday, Skipjack Nathan of Dorchester kicks off its sailing season with free educational sails, where you can enjoy a trip onto the Choptank and learn about the historical importance of skipjacks to the local watermen.
