ANNAPOLIS — Maryland Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office, announces Ray Simmons of Cambridge, has been honored with the James M. Roche Spirit of Volunteerism Award. Mr. Simmons who serves as the Maryland ESGR eastern region chair and an ombudsman is responsible for promoting cooperation and understanding between Guard and Reserve members and their civilian employers and recognizing those employers who exceed the requirements established by federal law throughout the entire Maryland eastern region. The award was presented to Simmons by Jean Hulet, Maryland ESGR state chair during an ESGR recognition event held May 12 in Annapolis.
The James M. Roche Spirit of Volunteerism Award is the highest award given by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to a state committee volunteer for superior quality of service as a volunteer over a substantial period of years. The award highlights patriotism, good citizenship and public responsibility often achieved by great effort and quite often through personal sacrifice.
“Throughout the nomination process for Ray, I reached out to many of his colleagues, members of his community, and members of the armed forces to obtain their insights on the recipient’s patriotism, good citizenship and public responsibility throughout his community and beyond,” said Ms. Hulet. “I was overwhelmingly presented with the most positive feedback on this most deserving member of our committee.”
“As the 28th Adjutant General of Maryland, I watched Ray work tirelessly for the members of the Guard and other Reserve Components,” MG (Ret) James A. Adkins said.
ESGR seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
