Mrs. Cephas (back row left) and Mrs. Douglas (back row right) celebrate her recognition with enthusiastic Hurlock Elementary first graders Dorchester County

HURLOCK — January’s Volunteer of the Month for Dorchester County Public Schools combines her love for children and books by helping in Hurlock Elementary School’s Media Center several times each week.

Elaine Cephas was nominated for the honor by the school’s Media Specialist Katie Douglas who said, “I don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s amazing and the kids think she’s the best.” This sentiment was confirmed by a first grader who said, “Without Mrs. Cephas we wouldn’t find our books,” and another who said, “Mrs. Cephas is my special friend.”

Mrs. Cephas, who is retired and lives in Hurlock, says she looks forward to her days at Hurlock Elementary, organizing books and displays as well as helping the children. “We’re a team,” she says of Mrs. Douglas.
