CAMBRIDGE —Choptank Elementary School is excited to share that they have started the very first diverse step team in Dorchester County called “The Choptank Steppers.” This team is made up of 25 students, both boys and girls, in grades 3 through 5.

Students on this team must be in good academic standing, must consistently exhibit the “4 R’s” (Respectful, Responsible, Resilient, and Ready to learn); and exhibit good citizenship.
The goal of the step team is to promote unity, diversity and self-esteem by building character and discipline through synchronized structured movement.

“The Choptank Steppers,” under the direction of Patricia Hawkins, Jennifer Lake, Tiana Robinson, Thomas Ward, and Rachel Wise, meet after school every Monday and Wednesday to practice. Students have been working hard on their routine since early November, and performed for the first time on Jan. 8, at a school-wide PBIS incentive. Their performance was outstanding, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed it! “We would like to thank the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for supporting us at our very first performance.”

“The Choptank Steppers” are looking forward to continuing to perform at local events in the future. Currently, “The Choptank Steppers” is an unfunded program. Any donations would be greatly appreciated and can be made by contacting Mr. Ward at wardt@dcpsmd.org.
