CAMBRIDGE — Sandy Hill Elementary School and Dorchester Career and Technology Center collaborated with several community partners to host 15 Sandy Hill families at a recent healthy eating educational event. The purpose of the evening, organized by The Judy Center, was to demonstrate how families can eat healthy and delicious meals on a budget.

Parents saw recipes demonstrated by Nate Bratko, nutrition educator for the Food Supplement Nutrition Education (FSNE) program in Dorchester County, Chef Charlene Zinnel and her Culinary Arts students from DCTC, and Walmart Store #2272 associates while Hope Lee of Anchor Point entertained the under 5’s with a fun activity around eating healthy foods. Families then enjoyed the meal they learned how to make, served by Sandy Hill staff, Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay staff, and Walmart associates.

Additional information was provided by Master Gardener Robin Herman from the Community Garden in Cambridge who shared advice on growing food and Omeaka Jackson LCPC who spoke about the importance of creating routine with young children.

Parents left with complimentary gifts from participating organizations, including a grow bag, seeds, and other items to encourage healthy eating from the University of Maryland Extension — Dorchester County SNAP-ED program; planting soil and a crock pot from the Local Management Board; and ingredients for the event’s recipes from Walmart, packed by the Hyatt team.
