The Dorchester County Forestry Board sponsors an annual fourth-grade poster contest for the schools in Dorchester County. This poster contest has a theme: Forests are a Renewable Resource. Our Forestry Board would like our students to know more about one of our county’s largest industries. Scott Daniels, project forester, and George Radcliffe, forestry board member, offer a presentation to the fourth graders discussing the importance of good stewardship of this valuable economic resource.

Students learn about the forestry cycle of planting, thinning, harvesting, and replanting. They also hear about the value of the products made from this natural resource, including wood, paper, pencils and many other important materials. They learn the value of replanting the trees to harvest again many years later.

The Forestry Board Poster Contest winners received $50 for first prize, $25 for second prize, and the Honorable Mention winners received two movie passes donated by Cambridge Premiere Cinema. We thank the Cambridge Premiere Cinema for their donation to this contest. Prizes were presented on May 12.

Omaima Mahmoud, a fourth-grade student at Maple Elementary School, won the Overall County Prize, and will receive a ribbon and a trophy and was honored at the Dorchester County Board of Education Board Meeting on May 19. Her poster also appeared on the electronic billboard for a week. We thank the fourth grade teachers, art teachers, administration, and the Dorchester County Board of Education for their support of this contest.
