Cambridge Rotary awards $17,000 in scholarships

CAMBRIDGE — On May 5, at the Cambridge Yacht Club, the Cambridge Rotary Club awarded $17,000 in Scholarships to five deserving Dorchester County high school seniors. Bailey Michael Lowe and Destiny Kashyra Brown, NDHS, and Emory S. Wongus and Kaylie Joy Seabrease, C-SDHS, each received $4,000 Weygand scholarships. In addition to the Weygand scholarships, the Cambridge Rotary Club awarded a $1,000 vocational scholarship to Nathaniel Allen Lowe, a senior at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School.

The presentation of scholarships marked the 40th year that the Cambridge Rotary Club has recognized graduating seniors with financial aid.

W. David Bromwell Jr., principal at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, presented Emory S. Wongus and Kaylie Joy Seabrease to the Cambridge Rotary members. Emory, the son of Sharon Wongus, has a GPA of 3.5 and has been accepted by Salisbury University. Emory is a four sport athlete – football [Captain], lacrosse, swimming and basketball. In his senior year Emory was selected by the C-SDHS administrators and faculty as a Rotary “Student of the Semester.”

Kaylie Joy Seabrease is the other Weygand recipient from Cambridge-South Dorchester High. She is the daughter of Teresa Chrish and has a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.83 and is ranked 24th out of 162 students. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is a standout varsity soccer and softball player. For the fall semester, 2016, she has been accepted at Salisbury University.

J. Lynn Sorrells, principal of North Dorchester High School, presented Bailey M. Lowe and Destiny K. Brown to the Cambridge Rotarians. Bailey M. Lowe, son of Dennis Lowe Jr., and April Lowe, has a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.02 and stands 6 in a class of 91 students. He is the Senior Class President and a member of the National Honor Society. He has been accepted to attend the University of Maryland [College Park] in the fall of 2016.

Destiny K. Brown, daughter of Dail Brown, II and Tempia Cooper, has a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.26 and stands 3rd in her class of 96 students. She is president of the National Honor Society and secretary of the Dorchester County Association of Student Councils. Destiny had a lead role in NDHS Senior Class Play – “The Little Mermaid.” She has been accepted into the 2020 class of the University of Maryland [College Park].

The Rotary’s $1,000 Vo-tech Scholarship was awarded to Nathaniel Allen Lowe, a senior at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School. “Nate” has a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.73 and ranks 33rd in a class of 162 Students. He is member of the National Honor Society and a member of the National Technical Honor Society and the American Welding Society. He was quarterback and captain of the varsity football team and the captain of the varsity baseball team. He also was on the C-SDHS swim team. Nate has been accepted as a student as a Welding and Fabrication Engineering Technology major at Pennsylvania College of Technology in the fall of 2016.
