Board of Ed releases Reopening Draft Plan

CAMBRIDGE — On Monday afternoon, the Dorchester County Board of Education released its Reopening Draft Plan for public schools. The text of the plan follows:

Focus for Committee Work
• Develop a plan for Phase II
Partial return to school; limited number of students per classroom
A/B model – what does this look like?
• Develop a plan for Phase III
All students return to school
• Work through guiding questions
• Consider survey results/feedback from our families
Phase II Schedule Plans
• Plan informed by Parent/Community Survey results
• DCPS will follow an A Week/B Week schedule
Monday: Planning and professional development for staff, deep cleaning for schools
Tuesday-Friday: Students attend

A Week: 50% of students attend; others complete assignments to support learning during non-school week
B Week: Other 50% of students attend; others complete assignments to support learning during their non-school week
• C – Parents/families choose Online Distance Learning
• D – Students with special needs including English
Language Learners attend A and B weeks; DCPS employee school-aged children attend A and B weeks
Safety Recommendations
• Follow protocols with guidance from Dorchester County Health Department, MSDE, CDC

• Phase II protocols include requirements addressing the following:
Daily temperature checks; wearing of masks; social distancing Strict protocols for health room and procedures for sick staff and students
Regular hand washing/use of sanitizer at every transition
No assemblies, after school activities, guest presenters, visitors or outside organizations
Unique concerns of student or staff handled case by case
Operations: Food Service Recommendations

• Phase II – A Week, B Week Schedule
Week students are in school:
Students eat breakfast and lunch in classroom
Schedule for cafeteria pickup will follow social distancing protocols
Food will be served in closed containers Breakfast will be grab-and-go following safety protocols
Week students are not in school:
Students pick up food from school; hours for pick-up 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Transportation Recommendations
• A Week, B Week bus schedule determined by transportation and school administrators
• One student per seat unless in same family/day care; face coverings recommended
• Assigned seats
• Review of opening and closing times once A/B routes are established
• Buses will be cleaned between morning and afternoon routes and at the end of the day

Instruction Recommendations
• DCPS will continue teacher professional development on Schoology (our Learning Management System) which supports online learning using our curriculum resources
• Content supervisors will address COVID-19 learning gaps through curriculum documents and PD with teachers
• Plans are underway to support emotional/social/trauma needs at the school level Phase III
• All students return to school with health and safety protocols in place
• Transition from Phase II plan to Phase III during the 2020-2021 school year will occur when conditions are met per Dorchester County Health Department
