Board of Ed: First day of school is now Sept. 8

CAMBRIDGE — The Dorchester County Board of Education on Thursday unanimously agreed to amend the 2020-2021 school calendar, moving the first day of school for all students to Tuesday, Sept. 8.

“This adjustment allows the district and families more time to prepare for the challenges presented by virtual learning, particularly in the areas of electronic device preparation, distribution, and training on the use of the new learning platform for teachers, students, as well as parents,” a statement from the Board said.

Newly hired teachers will arrive on Aug. 17 and returning teachers will report on Aug. 24, as originally scheduled.

Superintendent of Schools Dave Bromwell said, “As we start the most unusual school year ever in Dorchester County, it’s important that we take every step we can to ensure success among our staff, students, and families while keeping everyone safe.”

Additionally, students’ schedules are being finalized this week, and the Board will post a “bell” schedule at the beginning of next week.
