SECRETARY — Last weekend was a north Dorchester extravaganza. On Friday evening East New Market offered its 1st annual tree lighting; Saturday was devoted to a full day of celebration in Hurlock; and Sunday evening Secretary was in the spotlight.

As usual, this little Eastern Shore town opens the town hall to youngsters eager to visit with Santa Claus and snack on chips, cookies, cupcakes, and drinks. Scheduled for 6 pm, by 6:10 pm the small office was jam-packed with children from a few months to pre-teens. Cell phones flashed as proud parents eagerly looked for the best angle to photograph their children.

At Secretary parties the highlight for the kids is always the volunteer fire department truck.  After seeing Santa (aka Donald Cameron), sharing their secret wishes with him, and eating sweets they lined up for a ride on the truck.  It was dramatic – on a pitch black night the truck wound its way through town with flashing lights and a whooping siren.

There was a lot to see. This year Secretary’s homes were decorated to the nth degree. On several streets clusters of brightly lighted homes rivaled decorations from the biggest towns. The winners of the lighting contest were:  1st place, 109 Branch St., Jody Hughes; 2nd place, 110 Branch St., Donald Cameron; and 3rd place 119 South St., Matthew Herd.
