Thirty Cambridge Main Street volunteers met Sunday to wrap roughly 300 presents in two and a half hours. Miracle on Poplar raised enough gifts to provide a merry Christmas to 75 children in Cambridge.

CAMBRIDGE — Area businesses rallied their resources to ensure dozens of children in Cambridge will have the joy of opening gifts on Christmas morning.

Katie Mae’s Country Shoppe, RAR Brewing, Mid Shore Graphics and the Young Professionals of Dorchester County were able to provide gifts to approximately 75 young people with the Miracle on Poplar gift drive. Children received four or five gifts each.

Nine children were given gifts through the Annual Cambridge Rescue Fire Company Train Garden toy drive, and 49 others were found through various Dorchester County elementary schools here in Cambridge. There were toys left over for at least 17 others, and these were also provided to schools, which said they had more children in need.

“For something that was so new, that was an incredible outcome,” said Cambridge Main Street Executive Director Brandon Hesson, whose organization had 30 volunteers wrap presents for more than two hours. “There will always be people in need in any community, and to see business owners working together to provide a Christmas for children is absolutely heartwarming.”

The toy drive started on Nov. 28, with a kickoff party at RAR Brewing, and was completed Saturday night. The group also gathered cash donations, which purchased supplies and more presents, as well as wrapping paper, scissors and bows. Drop off locations were also offered at other Dorchester County locations, including the Dorchester Family YMCA, the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce and Layton’s Chance winery.

Miracle on Poplar is the second-year effort that originated from last year’s Katie’s Kids toy drive done by Katie Mae’s and Jimmie & Sook’s.

Donations can still be dropped off at locations, and the group of business owners plan to meet in the coming weeks to discuss next year’s effort. Any business owners interested in participating in 2016 can send an e-mail to office@cambridgemainstreet.com, or call 443-477-0843.
