MACON, Ga. — More than three dozen local girls did the Eastern Shore proud on Saturday, when Cambridge’s ABM (About Being Motivated) Dance Team earned a collection of trophies at the Hip Hop Majorette Dance Competition in Macon, Ga.
Titles earned were: 1st Mini Girls’ Stands, 1st Jr. Girls’ Stands, 2nd Captain Battle Jrs., 3rd Senior Walk Thru, 3rd Mini Walk Thru. The Dorchester girls were up against stiff competition, with teams present from Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., Missouri and Ohio.
About Being Motivated Dance team is a group of girls ages 5-16. The young ladies from Cambridge, Easton, Salisbury, Greensboro, Trappe and Chestertown work hard at a variety of styles and routines, which they perform at local and regional contests and events.
Rhonda Meekins started the group four and a half years ago, and now operates a The ABM Dance Studio on Race Street. “I felt like we needed something for young girls to do,” she said.
Well, they’re certainly doing something. “We won five trophies and $1,250” at the contest, Ms. Meekins said, adding that the cash will be used for travel, costumes and other expenses.
The trip to Georgia came only after months of fundraising, so Ms. Meekins, the girls and their families made the most of it. When they weren’t practicing or competing, the girls toured Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University, both in Atlanta, Ga.
“I think it really made some of them want to go to college,” Ms. Meekins said, adding that some colleges offer dance scholarships.
Katrina Drones made the trip south to support the girls. She said on social media, “Congratulations ABM! I am so extremely proud to say it was truly a pleasure to have been able to watch the competition in person. I promise you, Groove City’s ABM girls showed up and showed out! And I made sure the other parents around me knew who I was there to support…Cambridge, Maryland!”
