Volunteers at Baywater Animal Rescue are cleaning, grooming and spending as much time with the dogs as possible to aid their return to good health. All of the Pomeranians were rescued from a puppy mill operation in Wicomico County on April 11.

CAMBRIDGE — Following the puppy mill bust in Wicomico County, Baywater Animal Rescue on Bucktown Road in Cambridge reacted quickly. Baywater Executive Director Maureen Scott-Taylor contacted authorities and signed on to take as many of the dogs as they could fit into their shelter space. Following is Ms. Scott-Taylor’s report of the puppy rescue, and a plea for help.

The first thing that hits you, when the puppies arrive, is the overwhelming smell of feces. Then you see the absolute fear in their eyes and your heart starts to ache. You are face to face with nine of the fortunate ones, dogs rescued from a horrific puppy mill in Eden, Wicomico County.

As animal welfare professionals, there is nothing more gut-wrenching than to see an animal that has been abused. The pure scale of this abuse (more than 300 dogs were rescued) is almost too much to bear. The team at Baywater Animal Rescue has only one concern at the moment — to get these nine dogs healthy, happy and adoptable. They have been through hell and back and we want to make the rest of their lives the absolute best they can be.

They have varying degrees of illness, from a double hernia, which Dr. Spofford of Bayside Animal Hospital successfully operated on last week, to pregnancy. Yes, we have three more on the way! We are all hoping for a successful delivery and healthy puppies. Most of these dogs will need major medical and dental care to make them whole again.

Baywater Animal Rescue has played a small but integral part in helping these dogs, but we sure could use your help. First, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the amazing outpouring of support we have received to date. Our community is incredible and we cannot thank you enough! You have stepped up and delivered food, toys, blankets, cleaning supplies and many other things we need. Our biggest need right now is for monetary donations to pay for surgery, medicines and ongoing care for these precious dogs. Please visit our website www.baywateranimalrescue.org to donate or mail your donation to Baywater Animal Rescue, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Thank you for your support.

Don’t forget to like us on Facebook and follow the progress of the Wicomico County puppies.
