Saunders carving available at auction

Submitted to Dorchester Banner/Pleasant Day
Warren Saunders presented one of his carvings to Jackie Vickers. The item will be auctioned to help support the activities of Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care.

CAMBRIDGE — Warren Saunders born and raised in Dorchester County on the family farm doing all of the things that a farm boy learns to do as he worked and lived around nature’s wild life. As the seasons changed so did the hunting and fishing and like most farm families, everyone went hunting for freshly killed game and fowl.

Whether it was geese, ducks, quail, wild turkeys, you can’t sit in a blind for hours and not learn about animals, song birds and wildfowl. He absorbed this as if by osmosis.

With his background, when he started carving his own decoys, the realistic poses and positions flowed through his hands to a block of wood, bringing it to life. A hobby became a later life profession carving beautiful birds and wildfowl, winning awards and earning the title of Master Carver. Warren’s work is well known on the East Coast where he demonstrates and teaches.

He presented an antique-style flat bottomed Red Breasted Merganser to Jackie Vickers at Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care. This bird was just used as a model for his art class.

It will be auctioned at the Holiday Benefit Gala on Dec. 5 where the doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a Taste of Dorchester provided by Dorchester’s restauranteurs, music donated by talented artists Emma Bailey, Dr. William Bair on classic violin, Betty Boda on the harp and Linda Andrews on classical guitar, and more live music as you wander through the halls lined with wreaths.

Buddy Foxwell donates his time to raise money through the live auction to provide Pleasant Day participants with a happy Christmas. Park free across the road at C-SD High School, there is no admission and a Taste of Dorchester is donated by Dorchester restauranteurs, free wine tasting, and live music will greet you when you get off one of the shuttle buses that will be running all evening.

Pleasant Day is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit so donations may be deducted to the approved limit. For more information call Jackie Vickers at 410-228-0190.
